Concrete help through compensation for disadvantages

A field report

I am a student at the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg. Two years before I started my studies, I suffered a stroke. As a result of this event, I had to spend several months in hospital or in rehab. At the end of this "clinical/medical" rehab, however, the journey was not yet over and I first had to "sort myself out" and find my way back to reality, so to speak. 2 years after the event, I took the plunge and started studying special needs education. But after just one semester, I realised that it wasn't so easy to study with the impairments (problems with attention and memory) that I had suffered as a result of the brain haemorrhage.

After the second semester, I turned to Wiebke Hendeß and, with her help and the help of a neuropsychologist, drew up an application for compensation for disadvantages, which should make studying easier. This was actually approved, so that from now on I will be able to replace written exams with other forms of examination (homework or oral exams). The Psychological Counselling Service and Wiebke Hendeß with her personal counselling were and are a great help during the entire process and during my studies in general. A tip from me to all those who have problems during their studies: Don't be shy and contact the respective counselling services in good time. If you have any personal queries, Ms Hendeß can put you in touch with me as a disability counsellor at Studentenwerk Oldenburg
